Paul Heaton is back from his holidays in the Canaries where he writes the songs. The Beautiful South are back, too and they are at the Carling Academy Newcastle on Sunday and their new album, Superbi, is fresh, modern and pointed, like a brand new pencil. We always mean to be fresh, says Paul, but we never get around to it. In a career that has spanned nearly two decades, The Beautiful South may possibly have earned the right to lie back and go stale.
J.C.H. Mounsey London SW13
We are at the Bargello in Florence, and she says, What are you thinking? and I say, Beauty, thinking of how very far we are now from the machine shop and the dry fields of Kansas, the treeless horizons of slate skies and the muted passions of roughnecks and scrabble farmers drunk and romantic enough to weep more or less silently at the darkened end of the bar out of, what else, loneliness, meaning the ache of thwarted desire, of, in a word, beauty, or rather its absence, and it occurs to me again that no male member of my family has ever used this word in my hearing or anyone elses except in reference, perhaps, to a new pickup or dead deer. By God, Henry, thats a beauty. This insight, this backward vision, first came to me as a young man, a boy really, as some weirdness of the airwaves slipped through the static of our new Motorola with a discussion of beauty between Robert Penn Warren and Paul Weiss at Yale College. We were in Kansas eating barbecue-flavored potato chips and waiting for Father Knows Best to float up through the snow of rural TV in 1963. I felt transported, stunned. Here were two grown men discussing beauty seriously and with dignity as if they and the topic were as normal as normal topics of discussion between men, such as soybean prices or why the commodities market was a suckers game or Oklahoma football or Gimpy Neiderland almost dying from his hemorrhoid operation. They were discussing beauty and tossing around allusions to Plato and Aristotle and someone named Pater, and they might be homosexuals. That would be a natural conclusion, of course, since here were two grown men talking about beauty instead of scratching their crotches and cursing the goddamned government trying to run everybodys business. Not a beautiful thing, that. The government. Not beautiful, though a man would not use that word. One time my Uncle Ross from California called my moms Sunday dinner centerpiece lovely, and my father left the room, clearly troubled by the word lovely, coupled probably with the very idea of California and the fact that my Uncle Ross liked to tap-dance. The light from the venetian blinds, the autumn, silver Kansas light laving the table that Sunday, is what I recall now because it was beautiful, though I of course would not have said so then, beautiful, as so many moments forgotten but later remembered come back to us in slants and pools and uprisings of light, beautiful in itself, but more beautiful mingled with memory, the light leaning across my mothers carefully set table, across the empty chair beside my Uncle Ross, the light filtering down from the green plastic slats in the roof of the machine shop where I worked with my father so many afternoons, standing or crouched in pools of light and sweat with men who knew the true meaning of labor and money and other hard, true things and did not, did not ever, use the word beauty.Late November, shadows gather in the shops north end, and Im watching Bobby Sudduth do piecework on the Hobbs. He fouls another cut, Motherfucker, fucking bitch machine, and starts over, sloppy, slow, about two joints away from being fired, but he just doesnt give a shit. He sets the bit again, white wrists flashing in the lamplight and showing botched, blurred tattoos, both from a night in Tijuana, and continues his sexual autobiography, Thats right, fucked my own sister, and Ill tell you, bud, it wasnt bad. Later, in the Philippines, the clap: As far as Im concerned, any man who hasnt had V.D. just isnt a man. I walk away, knowing I have just heard the dumbest remark ever uttered by man or animal. The air around me hums in a dark, metallic bass, light spilling like grails of milk as someone opens the mammoth shop door. A shrill, sullen truculence blows in like dust devils, the hot wind nagging my blousy overalls, and in the side yard the winch truck backfires and stalls. The sky yellows. Barn sparrows cry in the rafters. That afternoon in Dallas, Kennedy is shot.

hockey at Milton Keynes yesterday to win 5-2 after twice coming from behind to score three times in the closing ten minutes, writes Brian Tatlock. England got off to a fine start with a goal from Tina Cullen in the sixth minute. Mel Clewlows stinging shot was dug out from under the Korean goalkeeper by Mandy Nicholls to set up Cullen. The Korean equaliser came in the 15th minute, when Bo Ra Cho deflected the ball into the roof of the net following Hyun Jung Woos penalty corner strike. England led again early in the second half, when Jane Sixsmith forced the ball back to Tammy Miller to score with a fine reverse-stick shot. Korea levelled again through Eun Park Kyung, and as England tired Eun Jin Kim, Ok Myung Kim and Soo Jung Kim ran through to cement the Koreans victory.

Its been a long rime since I have reviewed gopher control in the vineyard. Its appropriate, given the time of year, so I thought we would take a look at it this month. All three rodents damage vines by chewing on them. New plantings and established vines are susceptible to both root damage and girdling. In addition to plant damage, these rodents will also move enough dirt to redirect water away from vines and literally into a hole in the ground. Ground squirrels specifically will chew drip lines and damage emitters. I have observed squirrels chewing things for no other reason than the fact that they are there. Control of these pests is broken into three fairly broad categories: biological, chemical and trapping.
Pocket gophers are fossorial (burrowing) rodents–so named because they have fur-lined pouches outside the mouth, one on each side of the face. These pockets, which are capable of being fumed inside out, are used for carrying food. Pocket gophers are powerfully built in the forequarters and have a short neck; the head is fairly small and flattened. The forepaws are large-clawed and the lips close behind large incisors. This feature allows them to use their incisors for digging without getting a mouthful of dirt, a unique feature to gophers. There are over 30 species of pocket gophers in the Western Hemisphere. Pocket gophers vary in size from 5 1/2 inches in length to over 13 inches in length. Litter sizes vary from one to 10 but typically average three to four. In the northern part of their range they have one litter per year, as opposed to up to two in the southern ranges. Young gophers are dispersed above ground and are capable of swimming as well on the search for suitable habitat to begin new burrow systems. Pocket gophers feed in three ways: they feed on roots, above-ground vegetation, and they pull vegetation into their tunnel to be stored in food caches for later consumption. In the vineyard, pocket gophers girdle vines, damage roots systems (most often in new plantings), and cause multiple-irrigation problems by promoting erosion and damaging drip lines. They are solitary little beasts, vigorously maintaining and defending their tunnel system. Depending on the species and available habitat, gopher population density may vary from six to eight per acre, to up to 62 per acre. Gophers do not hibernate and only cohabitate during the breeding season The burrowing activity of one gopher produces up to 70 mounds in one month. So how do you control such an active but solitary rodent? The fact that a gopher is solitary works to your advantage. You have three basic pest management tools for gopher control: Biological control, chemical control and trapping.
HOW MANY would have thought that the pest control business could mean big bucks for entrepreneurs in the country? Well, hows this for starters? The estimated total business turnover of the pest control industry in Malaysia is about RM80 million. As Dr Lee Chow Yang, Associate Professor (Urban

FMI estimates that highway construction expenditures will increase by approximately 3 percent in 2004, to a mark just shy of $64 billion. The year 2005 will be a near repeat in pace of growth, adding another $2 billion in volume put-in-place. This is slightly greater than what has been witnessed over the past two years, when growth was closer to 2 percent. It is said that timing is everything, and timing is precisely why the near-term growth outlook for highway construction falls below initial expectations. Under normal conditions, it could well be expected that 2004 and 2005 would see an increase in spending of perhaps twice as much or more than currently projected. However, the lack of a permanent federal transportation act has left the various state transportation agencies in a state of limbo and is the primary limiting factor for the industry. The previous six-year federal transportation act, TEA-21, expired on Sept. 30, 2003. Since no new bill was enacted at that time, the state transportation agencies have been operating under a series of extensions for more than nine months. The uncertainty and disruption caused by this situation has limited the planning and programming capabilities of these agencies and subsequent project letting capabilities, a condition that will continue until a permanent bill is enacted.
A 30-year-old problem may soon be solved, but whether the state Legislature has to get involved has yet to be seen. State Rep. Donald Friske, R-Merrill, testified before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in Madison Wednesday regarding his bill, AB 163, which would create an exemption for certain wetlands for the construction of a road located in Tomahawk. “Its difficult for me to conceive any kind of opposition to the second road,” Friske said, pointing out that he grew up near the land being looked at for the second road during his childhood and would often use it as a shortcut to town during his teen-age years. The 2.3- acre stretch is also used as a snowmobile trail.
This thesis will be tested on data pertaining to those Aberdeenshire turnpikes constructed before 1810 and will be considered from five standpoints: Aberdeenshire roads before 1796, the administration of the turnpike trusts, the topography of Aberdeenshire, local road construction practice, and the supervision of road construction. It will also be tested against relevant data published in the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia3 and the observations of contemporary writers.First it is necessary to establish the physical and theoretical criteria and the limits to be considered in argumentation. First, the roads to be considered all lay within the boundaries of the old county of Aberdeenshire as it existed before it became a part of the Grampian Region. Whilst concentrating on events in Aberdeenshire, reference will be made to road conditions and construction in the adjacent counties of Kincardineshire and Banffshire which formed the sparsely populated land mass of north-east Scotland. Second, the emphasis of this article, unlike some previous studies of turnpike roads,4 will be aimed primarily toward the engineering aspects of road construction, with the administration of road trusts being considered only where it impinged directly on engineering matters. Third, local road construction practices, established from archival sources, will be compared with those specified by Telford and McAdam, and with those used previously for the construction of roads in other areas of Britain.

Air ConditionerAir conditioning systems vary considerably in size and derive their energy from many different sources. Popularity of residential air conditioners has increased dramatically with the advent of central air, a strategy that utilizes the ducting in a home for both heating and cooling. Commercial air conditioners, almost mandatory in new construction, have changed a lot in the past few years as energy costs rise and power sources change and improve. The use of natural gas-powered industrial chillers has grown considerably, and they are used for commercial air conditioning in many applications.
Window-mounted air conditioners cool, circulate, filter and dehumidify the air. They range in size from small units with a cooling capacity of 5,000 BTUs (enough to cool a small room) to as high as 14,000 BTUs for normal home voltage. It is crucial that retailers sell the consumer the right size air conditioner. An oversized unit will cool but leave a damp and clammy feeling because of high relative humidity. An undersize unit will not operate effectively on very hot days. An effective rule of thumb to determine the BTUs needed to cool a room is to multiply the square feet of the room by 25, adding 1,000 for every window and 400 for each occupant. Example: A room measures 12 x 15 with two windows and two occupants. The formula works out to 180 sq. ft. x 25 = 4,500 + 2,000 for the windows + 800 for the occupants = 7,300, or a 7,000-8,000 BTU air conditioner.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.

Q Should flashing be used beneath rowlock brick window sills? If through-wall flashing is installed beneath these rowlocks, how are the sills anchored? If the anchors penetrate the flashing, does this lead to deterioration of the masonry below in freeze-thaw environments? A Rowlock brick sills contain many joints and are particularly susceptible to water penetration. For this reason, I do not recommend their use in freeze-thaw environments. When rowlock sills are used, they can be anchored using galvanized corrugated wall ties in the head joint between every fourth to sixth brick unit. When possible, I prefer that these anchors be attached to the backup wall on the vertical face, behind the sill, as shown in the drawing.

What We Must Do: America is facing a health care crisis caused by a combination of skyrocketing costs and an insurance system that leaves 47 million of us without any coverage. We must make quality, affordable health care available to all U.S. residents. All Americans should have access to a basic level of care that includes the prevention of disease, health promotion and education, primary care (including prenatal and reproductive health), acute care, long-term care and mental health care. At the same time, the federal government needs to take action to reduce the costs of health care for individuals, businesses and communities. As a nation, we are spending $1 out of every $6 we earn on health care. Over the last three decades, increases in the amount we spend on health care have consistently risen faster than wages and inflation. If nothing is done to control costs, we could be spending $3 trillion for health care by 2011 and $4.2 trillion by 2016. Thats 20 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).
The NBERs Program on Health Care holds two program meetings annually, as well as NBER Summer Institute sessions, an annual Frontiers in Health Policy Research Conference, and occasional theme meetings. Program members conduct research on a diverse range of issues in the economics of health, the delivery and financing of health care, and the interactions of health and health care with other areas of economic activity. Because Health Care is a large and active program, as reflected in the Working Papers issued by program members and in their presentations and publications, this report describes only a fraction of its work. Most Americans pay for health care with private health insurance obtained through employers. The loss of employment-based insurance frequently leads to either enrollment in government programs like Medicaid or the loss of health insurance altogether. Michael Chernew, David M. Cutler, and Patricia S. Keenan examine why the share of Americans without health insurance rose over the 1990s, despite the relative prosperity of the decade. In one paper, they relate changes in health insurance cost growth to changes in insurance coverage rates across metropolitan areas, accounting for a broad set of additional factors that may affect changes in coverage. (1) They find that rising premiums accounted for over half of the decline in health insurance coverage during the 1990s. A $1,000 increase in premiums is associated with a 2.6 percentage point decline in insurance coverage rates. They also project that rising health insurance costs will cause the number of uninsured to increase by 2 to 6 million people by 2010. In another paper, they report that the availability of uncompensated care leads to greater losses of insurance coverage when premiums rise. (2) Many of the uninsured say that they lack health insurance because it is unaffordable. M. Kate Bundorf and Mark V. Pauly develop normative and behavioral definitions of affordability, examining whether health insurance is affordable to the currently uninsured. Analyzing data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, they report that when a normative definition of affordability is used for family incomes above the poverty level, health insurance was affordable to 82 percent of the uninsured. Increasing the threshold to 2 and 3 times the poverty level, the proportions of the uninsured classified as able to afford coverage were 55 percent and 34 percent, respectively. These researchers also find that, with a behavioral definition of affordability, which is defined by the health insurance purchase behavior of individuals with similar economic circumstances, about half of the uninsured could purchase health insurance. Thus, these economists believe that affordability is not the sole barrier to health insurance coverage. (3)

He was horrified to find that insurance companies discriminated against gays by insisting that they take HIV tests, and then turning down their applications for insurance and mortgages. Whatever the rights and wrongs of this, and one can see both sides of it, he decided to set up his own insurance company specialising in policies for homosexuals.

Pregnancy Vitamin

A study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of 100 mg vitamin C per day in preventing PROM. A double blind design was employed. Subjects were pregnant women with no acute or chronic diseases and lt; 20 weeks gestation. The subjects were allocated 1 of 2 groups by a random-number tables. One group received 100 mg vitamin C per day and the other group received a placebo. Women were evaluated according to standardized procedures by trained nutritionists and physicians. From weeks 20 to 36, women were evaluated every 4 weeks. At each evacuation a vaginal exploratory examination was performed and a vaginal swab was taken for Gram staining and microbiologic study. At the end of pregnancy, the incidence of PROM was registered as the primary outcome. A total of 109 subjects completed the study. Mean plasma vitamin C concentrations decreased significantly throughout the pregnancy in both groups (P = 0.001), and there were no significant differences between groups. Between weeks 20 and 36, mean leukocyte vitamin C concentrations decreased from 17.5 micrograms/10s to 15.23 micrograms/10S cells in the supplemented group (within-and between-group differences: P = 0.001). The incidence of PROM was 14 per 57 pregnancies (24.5%) in the placebo group and 4 per 52 pregnancies (7.69%) in the supplemented group (relative risk: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.078, 0.837). Daily supplementation with 100 mg of vitamin C after 20 weeks of gestation appears to effectively reduce the occurrence of PROM.
Comment: PROM affects 10-20% of all pregnancies. It is the main known cause of preterm delivery and is associated with increased rates of neonatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Vitamin C plays a role in the synthesis of collagen, which is involved in maintaining the mechanical strength of the chorioamniotic membranes. The results of the present study indicate that supplementing with 100 mg/day of vitamin C beginning in the 20th week of gestation decreased the incidence of PROM by 74% in Mexican women with borderline-low dietary vitamin C intake. Whether vitamin C supplementation would reduce the incidence of PROM in women whose dietary intake of vitamin C is higher should be the topic of future investigation. Casanueva E, et al. Vitamin C supple-mentation to prevent premature rupture of the chorioamniotic mem-branes: a randomized trial. Am J Clin Nutr 2005;81:859-863.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has issued a committee opinion (similar to a position statement) on vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy. The statement urges that it is essential that obstetrician-gynecologists recognize the possible health hazards of excessive use of vitamin A supplements prior to conception or during early pregnancy. Concerns have been raised in Europe about the possibility that a pregnant woman might obtain a potentially teratogenic dose of vitamin A by eating liver. Some samples of calf liver from Europe have been found to contain extraordinarily high levels of vitamin A. Retail samples from US markets, however, appear to contain much lower levels of the vitamin and would not be expected to be toxic. Because dietary vitamin A intakes in the US are generally adequate, routine vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy is not recommended. If supplements are taken, a dose of 500 IU/day should be considered the maximum intake prior to and during pregnancy. Most prenatal vitamin preparations contain 5000 IU or less, but some over-the-counter products contain 25,000 IU or more. Women who are or may become pregnant and who are using high doses of vitamin A supplements should be cautioned about the potential teratogenicity.

Cement use in the historic cemeteries of the French Quarter Although most concrete crypts and mausoleums are built in low-lying areas, where water could easily destroy a coffin, its not entirely true for the city of New Orleans. Basically, the majority, if not all, of the crypts and mausoleums in the cemeteries of New Orleans were built along the lines of traditional European cemeteries and to represent the architecture of a French city. In fact, many visitors to New Orleans have stated that these cemeteries do look like a miniature city-a “city of the dead”1 (Fig. 2 and 3). Most of the crypts and mausoleums in New Orleans are constructed of brick covered with a cement plaster (see Fig. 4). Even when these crypts and mausoleums need repair work done, workers use a mixture of both lime and cement. This combination does not detract from the original structure.2
No retrospective would be complete without remembering the contributions of leading figures who have helped shape the industry. In this issue recognizing todays top contractors (see page 27), it is fitting to salute some of the pioneers from CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS early days. It was Corbettas dedication to the development of a strong concrete industry, however, that earned him the moniker Mr. Concrete. He was instrumental in founding several organizations, starting in 1950 with the Concrete Industry Board of New York City, which brought together concrete contractors, producers, architects, engineers, testing labs, cement manufacturers, and reinforcing steel producers.

Alan M. Garber [*] In a body of work, Laurence C. Baker thus asks how managed care can bring about widespread effects on health care markets and health care delivery. In two papers on health care spending, [1] Baker finds that areas with high levels of HMO market share spent less on fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries. Since prices for Medicare-covered services largely are fixed by regulation under Medicares Prospective Payment System and physician fee schedule, the lower expenditures probably reflect reductions in the intensity of services that Medicare patients receive in areas with heavy penetration of managed care. Furthermore, because the patients studied were covered by the traditional fee-for-service Medicare program, the fact that their care appears to be influenced by the presence of managed care plans suggests that the managed care system can have important effects on the performance of the entire health care system. Changes in health care spending lead to questions about the mechanisms by which managed care may affect expenditures on and outcomes of care. In more recent work, Baker and Martin L. Brown of the National Cancer Institute report [2] that areas with high HMO market shares saw consolidation in mammography facilities through the early 1990s. In other words, higher market share areas had fewer mammography providers, each doing higher volumes. Because there are significant economies of scale in providing mammography, consolidation is associated with reductions in the cost and often the price of mammograms. But consolidation also could harm patients if it made it more difficult to obtain the procedure. To determine whether this occurred, Baker and Brown study cancer diagnoses and mortality rates. Although they find that waiting times for appointments were sometimes longer in markets with greater consolidation, they also find no evidence that cancers were diagnosed at later (and more severe) stages, or that mortali ty rates were higher, in such markets.

Once considered the province of 50-something women, cosmetic surgery is gaining popularity among both sexes of all ages. Driving the trend is a combination of improved surgical techniques and baby boomers seeking to delay aging.”We see a lot of professionals who work in the corporate world or own businesses,” says J. Barry Boyd, a plastic surgeon in Winter Park, Florida. “Cosmetic surgery has become a common choice for them to maintain their appearance and physique.”In 1994, approximately 41 percent of aesthetic plastic surgical procedures were performed on people aged 35 to 50. Boyd says having procedures at a younger age may minimize the need for more extensive surgery later and may produce better results.
Summary points Cosmetic surgery remains highly dependent on the skill of the operator, and technological advance should be viewed with this in mind Large volume infiltration can reduce the cost to benefit ratio for selected indications Lasers have a relatively limited niche in medical aesthetics

Pregnancy Vitamin

Studies of pregnant women in the United States report that average vitamin A (retinol) intakes are higher than the recommended dietary allowance. The objectives of a study recently published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association were to determine if vitamin A supplements are necessary for pregnant women in the first trimester in a population at low nutritional risk, to characterize use of vitamin A-containing supplements in this population, and to determine if supplementation provides excessive amounts of retinol. In the absence of a tolerable upper intake level for vitamin A, excessive retinol intake is defined as twice the RDA ([is greater than] 1600 retinol equivalents). Sixty-four healthy, middle-to-upper-income women in the first trimester of pregnancy, who were patients of three physicians, participated in the study. Two of the physicians prescribed prenatal vitamin/mineral supplements. The third physician followed the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine and did not routinely prescribe prenatal supplements. Of those for whom prenatal vitamin/mineral supplements were not prescribed (n = 29), 17 (58%) self-supplemented. The women completed a questionnaire that inquired about lifestyle, health, and dietary habits, including use of nutritional supplements. They also completed a three-day food record, including two weekdays and one weekend day. Twenty of the subjects (31%) did not meet the RDA for vitamin A from food sources. Forty-four women (69%) used vitamin A-containing supplements. Of those who used supplements, 23% did not meet the RDA from food sources, and 10 of the 20 who did not use supplements did not meet the RDA. Mean intake of vitamin A from food sources was 159 [+ or -] 116% of the RDA and mean energy intake was 2059 [+ or -] 447 kcal. Mean vitamin A intake from food and supplements was 250 [+ or -] 181% of the RDA. All women who used supplements met the RDA for vitamin A when the combination of food and supplements was considered. Ten women consumed excess retinol, with only one of the women consuming too much retinol from food sources (primarily beef liver, fortified breakfast cereals, and fortified skim milk) alone. Nine of the 10 women who consumed excess retinol were users of over-the-counter supplements, as opposed to prescribed prenatal supplements.
In this controlled trial conducted in Tanzania, 1075 HIV-infected pregnant women between 12 and 27 weeks gestation were randomly assigned to receive vitamin A supplements, multivitamins without vitamin A, both supplements, or placebo for the remainder of their pregnancies. Vitamin A was singled out because previous studies of HIV-infected women had shown particularly high frequencies of biochemical deficiency of this vitamin. The vitamin A supplement contained 30 mg [Beta]-carotene plus 5000 IU preformed vitamin A. The multivitamin contained 20 mg thiamin, 20 mg riboflavin, 25 mg vitamin [B.sub.6] 100 mg niacin, 50 [micro] g vitamin [B.sub.12], 500 mg vitamin C, 30 mg vitamin E, and 0.8 mg folic acid. Among those women whose pregnancy outcome was known, fetal death, low birth weight, severe preterm birth, and small size for gestational age at birth were all significantly more common among women who did not receive multivitamins than among those who did. For each of these outcomes, the risk was decreased by at least one-third by multivitamin supplementation. Vitamin A supplementation had no significant effect on any of these outcomes. Multivitamin (but not vitamin A supplementation) resulted in significant increases in the mothers CD4, CD8, and CD3 counts. The effect of supplementation on transmission of HIV from mother to child was not assessed. These findings indicate that multivitamin supplementation may improve pregnancy outcomes and clinical status among HIV-infected pregnant women, at least in developing countries. The beneficial effect of multivitamins may be mediated through improvement in the mothers immune status and hematological status or through increased placental weight. How the individual vitamins produce these effects is not understood, however. The authors suggest that poor absorption and increased vitamin A requirements among HIV-infected pregnant women might have explained the lack of effect of vitamin A. Higher doses of vitamin A might have a beneficial effect, but the possibility of teratogenicity from high-dose vitamin A supplementation must also be taken into consideration.

Rieter Sells Cabling, Twisting and Texturing Machine Business Rieter has sold its business in cabling, twisting and texturing machines to Co-Martin of France retroactive from October 31, 2006. The new owners have many years of experience in the man-made fiber business, and are taking over all activities at the location in Valence, France. Both sides agreed not to disclose the selling price. After careful examination of all possible options, the Board of Directors and Group Management decided to sell subsidiary Rieter Textile Machinery France SAS in Valence with all three business fields to Co-Martin. The Rieter subsidiary in Valence employs 153 persons, and achieved a turnover of approximately 50 million euro in 2005.
Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Who is doing this work and making sure that its adequately funded, that they have the ability to do their advertising and to make assistance to businesses.”
The proposed ordinance being considered by the Orem City Council would allow the following businesses to locate in historic homes:

What made the difference was aloof frontwoman Victoria Bergsman, who last year dramatically left the band hours before an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show. This in the wake of a traumatic trip to the States, where she collapsed on a New York stage and the band had their equipment nicked in Boston. The Concretes have recruited a new singer from within their own ranks- drummer Lisa Millberg. Taking just the bands nervy start, Millberg seems to be a mistake. The gangly blondes awful melodic aim makes you fear for the lights. You only snatch at rare moments where she finds a delicate sigh that matches the tenderness of certain songs. Uncomfortable at the front of the stage, Millberg continually seeks reassurance from colleagues, especially guitarist Maria Eriksson, with whom she shares some wayward call and responses. Yet Millberg connects with the crowd, not only through vulnerability, but also with a playful banter unknown in previous shows. She points out that this is the 11th time the outfit have performed in London and adds that “the venues keep getting smaller”. Such is The Concretes plight that the vocalist introduces “Oh Boy” with an urge to vote for their forthcoming single on digital station BBC6. This is one of the few numbers close to matching the band in their pomp.

IT is hardly surprising there is a growing crisis in social housing with no new council homes having been built for two decades. Soaring property prices coupled with fewer homes available has led to local authorities being unable to meet demand. LEWISTON, Idaho — Lisa Benner and her horse are endurance athletes. They covered 100 miles across the Sierra Nevadas in less than 24 hours, and now theyre training to do it again. “Its you against the clock,” Benner said of the difficult competition. “To finish is to win.” When the Western States Trail Ride began at 5:15 a.m. near Truckee, Calif., 196 horses thundered into the mountains, but only 87 crossed the finish line at Auburn, Calif. within the allotted time. The 44-year-old woman and her Arabian, Jack, finished in 23 hours, 33 minutes.
DAMASCUS, Md. (AP) — A fire killed 25 horses at a farm known for training horses for competitions involving running courses with tight turns. The farm trains competitive reining horses, which run courses with many hairpin turns. It also boards and trains quarter horses, which are bred to be sprinters.

WE CONFESS TO SKEPTICISM when the University of Arkansas sent a press release saying the school would be making an announcement of epic proportions. Exaggeration being common in press releases, we initially suspected that four previously undiscovered parking places had been identified on campus. Its been Chancellor John Whites goal ever since coming to the university to turn it into a nationally competitive research university. And thats exactly what this gift can help do. This unprecedented generosity from the Walton family will transform the University of Arkansas for our students and faculty and in the process position us to serve as a powerful engine of economic development and cultural change for the entire state, White said. What the Walton family has done today will improve life in Arkansas for generations to come, and we are grateful beyond words.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma voters constitutionally secured their right to hunt and fish and exempt disabled veterans from property taxes by overwhelmingly approving state questions in Tuesdays general election. Voters easily approved all four state questions on Tuesdays ballot by double-digit margins, based on results from nearly half of the states precincts. State Question 742, which adds a new section to the Oklahoma Constitution declaring that all Oklahomans have the right to “hunt, trap and fish” subject to reasonable regulation, was approved with 80 percent of the vote.

Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)
Hypnosis is a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings. But its not all that different from being absorbed in thought or reading a book. With hypnosis, you are far more open to suggestion, at least to suggestions compatible with what you are motivated to achieve. It is a form of intense receptive concentration. Accordingly, hypnosis often is used to modify behavior and overcome phobias and bad habits–it can help you make changes that youve been unable to make otherwise. Questions notwithstanding, hypnosis seems to be effective for many people. In fact, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel has endorsed its use for the relief of various types of chronic pain. As a relaxation technique, hypnosis can help reduce your stress. Its also used to relieve phobias, lessen anxiety, break addictions and ease symptoms of conditions such as asthma or allergy. Using hypnosis can help patients control nausea and vomiting from cancer medications and morning sickness, reduce bleeding during surgery, steady the heartbeat and bring down blood pressure.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.
Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

NOT JUST TOURISTS * Friends of Cuba in the Toronto area who wonder what they can take to help out when they travel to Cuba have a practical new possibility. A non-profit, volunteer-run organization called “Not Just Tourists Toronto” will send you on your way with a suitcase of medicines and medical supplies destined for a doctor in the area you plan to visit. The projects start-up was assisted by donations from the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP), the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA), and the United Steelworkers (USW). In its first year of operation, project volunteers collected, packed and sent more than 1,000 kilograms of medicines and medical supplies abroad with tourists. In 2005, the United Steelworkers donated space for the group and the amount of donations sent rose to 2,161 kilos. Bill Howes, one of the projects founders, now offers an e-mail course designed to help people in other Canadian cities and abroad to develop Not Just Tourist projects in their own communities. (He is a retired executive assistant to the president of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council.) As a result, NJT projects have started in Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa. Childbirth: Hypnosis can ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH says that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)

If you are seeking relief for a medical condition, you probably want to find a health care professional–such as a physician, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker–who is trained and experienced not only in hypnosis but also with your particular symptom or ailment. Always seek people who have had the maximum training possible in the area in which you are seeking help. Remember, it is your mind they will be working with. Finding a qualified hypnotherapist isnt that hard. Many health care professionals licensed in other fields practice hypnosis, so chances are good that your health care professional can give you a referral. Two major organizations that are recognized as having high professional standards are The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and The Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH). Both can provide the names of qualified practitioners in your area:

Self Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings. But its not all that different from being absorbed in thought, or reading a book. With hypnosis, you are far more open to suggestion, at least, to suggestions compatible with what you are motivated to achieve. It is a form of intense receptive concentration. Accordingly, hypnosis often is used to modify behavior and overcome phobias and bad habits-it can help you make changes that youve been unable to make otherwise. Questions notwithstanding, hypnosis seems to be an effective modality for many people. In fact, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) panel has endorsed its use for the relief of various types of chronic pain. As a relaxation technique, hypnosis can help reduce your stress. Its also used to relieve phobias, lessen anxiety, break addictions and to ease symptoms of conditions such as asthma or allergy. Using hypnosis can help patients control nausea and vomiting from cancer medications and morning sickness, reduce bleeding during surgery, steady the heartbeat and bring down blood pressure.
